Hello, my sweet friends.
I've been working with a local nonprofit called MASA -- Milwaukee Area Science Advocates-- to build raised garden beds at the Milwaukee Women's Shelter. The shelter offers emergency housing for women and children leaving domestic violence situations. In 2016, it housed 115 women and 109 children. Residents are given food, shelter, assistance in finding jobs and permanent housing, and comprehensive treatment and services for abuse, addiction, poverty, and mental health.
MASA has been coming into the shelter bi-monthly to provide interactive workshops to residents-- how to cook, how to grow food, how to make meals on a budget-- things like that. Thanks to a Sweet Water grant, we have been able to purchase a rainwater system to divert stormwater for use in the beds.
SO WE ARE BUILDING A GARDEN. A vegetable garden. A fruit garden. To grow things. To find independence in. But we need financial help. 100% of your donation will fund the Urban Garden Project. It may go toward building raised beds; it may go toward plant starters, soil, or educative workshops, but all of it will be used to support these women on their path to independence. If you would like to donate, use the button to the right of the screen.
The primary goal of this project is two-fold: to offer fresh and healthy produce to educate residents on nutrition and cooking, and to encourage empowerment and independence in the garden and in life.
THANK YOU!! So much. I can't wait to update later this summer with progress photos.
